2024 Keynotes

Spring Summit Keynote speaker Elaine Lin Hering will present Using Your Voice to Craft the Career and Life You Want. The common advice “just speak up” falls flat if we fail to recognize the silence we’ve learned and the real and perceived costs associated with speaking up. We explore how learned silence and the ways we unintentionally silence people undercut our best intentions. In this session, we interrogate the role silence plays in your leadership and offer concrete ways for unlearning how we silence ourselves and finding and using your voice – for the impact you want.

ABOUT ELAINE

Elaine Lin Hering is a former Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School. She works with organizations and individuals to build skills in communication, collaboration, and conflict management. She has worked on six continents and facilitated executive education at Harvard, Dartmouth, Tufts, UC Berkeley, and UCLA. She has served as the Advanced Training Director for the Harvard Mediation Program and a Managing Partner for Triad Consulting Group. She has worked with coal miners at BHP Billiton, micro-finance organizers in East Africa, mental health professionals in China, and senior leadership at the US Department of Commerce. Her clients include American Express, Chevron, Google, Nike, Novartis, PayPal, Pixar, and the Red Cross. She is the author of the forthcoming book Unlearning Silence: How to Speak Your Mind, Unleash Talent, and Live More Fully  (Penguin, 2024).

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how you have learned and benefited from
    silence
  • Identify your unique value-add perspective
  • Utilize key levers for using your voice
  • Develop a personal strategy for using your voice that aligns with your strengths and wiring

Former Harvard Law Faculty member Elaine Lin Hering has written a game-changing book. Unlearning Silence: How to Speak Your Mind, Unleash Talent, and Live More Fully (Penguin 2024) explores the pervasive and negative impacts of silence in our professional and personal lives. And more importantly, offers actionable strategies for what to do instead.

Register for Spring Summit as a professional or collegiate attendee for the full conference and receive a complimentary copy of Elaine’s book during the conference. *Limited to first 120 registrations.

ABOUT UNLEARNING SILENCE

Having a seat at the table doesn’t mean that your voice is actually welcome. Knowing something is wrong doesn’t mean it’s easy to speak up. In fact, there are incentives for many of us to stay silent. Why speak up if you know that it won’t be received well, and in fact, often makes things worse?

In Unlearning Silence, Hering explores how we’ve learned to be silent, how we’ve benefited from silence, how we’ve silenced other people—and how we might choose another way. She teaches how to recognize and unlearn unconscious patterns so we can make more intentional choices about how we want to show up. Only by unlearning silence can we more fully unleash talent, speak our minds, and be more complete versions of ourselves… and help other people do the same.

Elaine is offering preorder bonuses if you order 3, 5, 10+ copies now, including:
