Prospectus Letter

Dear Partner,

We are thrilled to announce GESTEM 2024!  The Rocky Mountain Section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE-RMS) is excited to be planning our 21st Annual Girls Exploring Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (GESTEM) program to be held Thursday, May 16th 2024 at the Auraria Campus in Downtown Denver, CO. This exciting event exposes middle school girls to the wide range of opportunities in potential careers in STEM fields through hands-on workshops and interactions with engineering professionals.  This year we are planning to host up to 1,000 girls.

An event of this scale would not be possible without the generous support of our corporate partners. Your partnership with GESTEM offers you a wide range of opportunities, benefitting middle school students, SWE, and your organization and your employees. You will gain increased visibility in the engineering community, networking opportunities for your company and your employees, in addition to engaging future engineers.

We have three specific partnership opportunities for the GESTEM event:

Workshop Presenters
Provide an interactive, hands-on workshop relevant and appropriate for girls ages 12-13 to introduce students to real world aspects of science, engineering, technology and math, and the many diverse fields available. Contact:  gestem.presenters@gmail.com.

Volunteer Guides
Spend the day with a small group of girls (~10) from different middle schools, leading them to each of their 3 workshops. Share your experiences with STEM with the girls over lunch and throughout the day. Contact:  gestem.guide@gmail.com.

Financial Support & In-Kind Donations
GESTEM is presented entirely by volunteers, and we rely on the generosity of corporate sponsors and grants to fund this project. GESTEM is 100% free for attendees, over half of whom qualify for free and reduced lunch programs. SWE RMS is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization.

Please visit our website for more information or contact us at swe.gestem@gmail.com.

Sincerely,

Sarah Gilmore                                                                                                 Maureen Masiulis

ABOUT GIRLS EXPLORING SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATH (GESTEM)

This outreach event started as GESET (Girls Exploring Science, Engineering, and Technology) in 2003.  The event was renamed GESTEM in 2009 to leverage the increased recognition of the STEM acronym.  Over the years the scope of the event has fluctuated with available resources and the economy. This year, through a strategic planning process, we have further refined our goals for the event to be:

  • Identify and strategically invite young women that may not have exposure to STEM in their current school or home atmosphere
  • Demonstrate how STEM careers use math and teamwork to solve problems where helping people is an integral part of STEM careers
  • Demonstrate that innovation requires diversity in gender, ethnicity, religion, culture and many other factors

Program Features:

  • School day field trip format allows us to reach students who may otherwise have never dreamed of the possibilities in STEM careers that might not have the opportunity to attend an after school or weekend extra-curricular program.
  • Free for participants, many of whom are eligible for free/reduced lunch programs.  Only cost to the schools is transportation to/from the event.
  • Hands-on workshops engage the girls to excite them about STEM careers.
  • An adult influencer education track for teacher/parent chaperones (while girls attend workshops with GESTEM guides).
